As followers of Jesus Christ, we not only affirm the marvelous truth that there is a supernatural transformation in believers, but we must remind ourselves that in defense of the faith we believe, we are also called to live according to the faith we defend. 1 Peter 3:15 gives us a command: "but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect." Note that before we are qualified to give an answer, we must meet a requirement. The sovereignty of Christ over the lives of His followers is the foundation of all the answers we give.

Once we have balanced words and deeds, there are immense opportunities around us to speak with honest people who question us or who are evasive. The starting point for the follower of Christ is for their beliefs and conduct to be consistent. From there, the most important key to evangelism is to listen beyond the question of the person who is questioning us. Answering only the question without responding to the questioner shows an unbalanced faith that is not practiced.
