Those already familiar with the thought of the Reformer John Calvin will appreciate this commentary on an important Old Testament book. With his typical style of avoiding superfluous discussions and his vast knowledge of other Scriptures, this commentary is a true tool for the Bible scholar.

For those who have not yet enjoyed the works of this servant of God, who sought simplicity and precision in the interpretation of the Scriptures, this commentary will be a pleasant introduction to the theologian whose life motto was "My heart I offer to you, O Lord, promptly and sincerely." May God use this work for His glory!

The brevity of Obadiah's message seems to reflect the content of his book: "bad news must be delivered quickly and directly."

The men of Edom, descendants of Esau, repeated Cain's old sin. Instead of behaving as true "keepers of their brother," given their kinship with the Israelites, the men of Edom acted as if they were enemies.

Obadiah's message is clear: God will not hold the wicked guiltless, even if they are close to His people. By their attitude, the Edomites had endangered the promised Seed of Abraham, through whom "all the families of the earth would be blessed" (Genesis 12:3).

Obadiah is a book that should be read just like its message: quickly and in light of Covenant history.

In a time like ours, when the cause of the Almighty is at stake on all fronts, there is no doubt that Obadiah's words should resonate in the mind and heart of every reader interested in the advancement of God's Kingdom in history.
