The Assurance of Faith

The author says:

"Many times Christians debate which is the correct apologetic strategy. Some believe we should use evidence, others prefer logical reasoning. Some appeal to common sense, while others point to history. I had the privilege of having one of the most brilliant Christian minds of the 20th century, Cornelius Van Til, as my professor, known for his "presuppositionalist" approach, which I will explain in this book.

I would like to propose an "integral apologetics," in which we take advantage of all forms of divine revelation, and in which we use the best of different strategies, depending on the person and the situation we address.

To achieve this, we must know the best of each apologist. Returning to the most fundamental questions, I agree with Van Til that we must denounce the unbeliever's claim to be independent of God and proclaim the absolute and sovereign authority of God and the Scriptures. However, I also believe that we must take advantage of the abundant evidence that surrounds us (general revelation) and that resides within ourselves (we are made in the image of God). I believe that "all truth is God's," that absolutely everything we consider in creation will point to God, and that any thought that attempts to deny God will inevitably face contradiction and insecurity.

If someone believes in the theory of evolution and this prevents them from believing in God, I ask, why not show them the scientific evidence that contradicts this theory? If someone believes that the Bible is full of errors and contradictions, why not show them the coherence of the Scriptures? Although it is not always easy, any type of truth or apologetic evidence, correctly used, should help us to present or defend the gospel.

This book is not a practical evangelism manual. Nor does it pretend to be a philosophical treatise. It aims more at something in between. My purpose is to offer Christians some tools to help them defend their faith more effectively.

First, I offer a simplified perspective of Western philosophy, as an "x-ray" of the unbeliever's thought. In this, we will see a special emphasis on the insecurity that comes with not accepting God as the source of truth.

Then, we will analyze some key passages that help us understand the true problem of man. Then we will review some apologetic approaches and some of the best arguments.

We will look at authors such as Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, Cornelius Van Til, Francis Schaeffer, Josh McDowell, Norman Geisler, Antonio Cruz, John Frame, and others.

And finally, we will make a synthesis of all that has been presented with the corresponding proposals."

A brief but comprehensive manual of Christian apologetics, ideal as a basic text for study in Seminaries and other theological training institutions.
