Martin Luther's Commentaries are an essential reference, not only for understanding his reforming activity but also for understanding the change in the method of biblical exegesis and exposition that occurred after the Reformation. Luther's hermeneutical principle is based on the premise that God reveals himself in Scripture and not in the ecclesiastical structure, giving Scripture undeniable authority.
Known as "catholic epistles," meaning universal, due to their peculiar common characteristic of being addressed to the Church in general rather than to a particular group of believers, the letters of James, 1st and 2nd Peter, the epistle of Jude, and the three of John constitute, within the body of New Testament writings, a block of intense didactic and doctrinal content.
The reformer's criteria and opinions regarding the epistle of James are widely known. It should not surprise us, therefore, that he concentrated his expository efforts on those of Peter, Jude, and, essentially, on John's letters, for whom Luther felt an extraordinary predilection.
Here, once again, he demonstrates both his stature as an interpreter of the Word and his courage in relentlessly denouncing the errors of his opponents. Luther uses as much vehemence in ironically and harshly identifying the clerics of his time with the false teachers described by Jude, as he does pastoral passion in describing the intensity of God's love expounded by John, highlighting, in both cases, with clear lucidity, his concept of salvation by faith apart from the works of the law.
