Friend of sinners

Few sections of the Word of God are as well known as this story of the lost son who returns to his paternal home after abundantly reaping the fruits of his folly. Our hearts pound as we read about the foolishness of this rebellious son and of this kind and forgiving father - who watches the son he loves depart and then, with that same love, receives him when he returns from his straying. It is difficult to remain indifferent to such a moving story.

But what does this parable really mean? What did Christ want to teach us with this simple story, taken from everyday and family life?
