The silence of the night was broken by the sound of horses' hooves. Harriet remained motionless, hidden by a tree, peering through the shadows. As the three bounty hunters stopped just a few feet from her hiding place, she barely dared to breathe: After escaping danger, would she lose the hope of being free?
At six years old, the whip taught Harriet what it meant to be a slave. When she said she would escape north, the other slaves mocked her. They didn't imagine that this girl would end up leading slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad.
Not even the rewards offered for her capture prevented her from risking her life fighting for freedom, as the country headed towards civil war. Harriet also advised generals, improved conditions in war hospitals, and fought for the dignity of slaves. (1820?-1913)
